The award ceremony was organized by the International Council of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and with the participation of 144 programs from 25 countries, excluding the United States. In addition to winning the award for drama ''Jewel in the Crown'', Britain won the best documentary award for Channel 4 by ''The Heart of the Dragon'', and ''The Tragedy of Carmen'' in the category of best performing arts.
